RAMALLAH, May 7, 2026 (WAFA) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called on the European Commission to activate its "blocking veto" to protect the independence of judges and prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigating the genocide in the Gaza Strip.
In a post published Wednesday on X, Sánchez stated, "Imposing sanctions on defenders of international justice jeopardizes the entire human rights system. The European Union cannot stand idly by in the face of this injustice."
He continued, "Therefore, we call on the Commission today to activate the blocking veto to protect the independence of the ICC and the United Nations and their efforts to end the genocide in Gaza."
The "blocking veto" is a mechanism that allows the European Union to disregard the laws and decisions of other countries that affect its interests.
The Spanish Prime Minister also called for action against the sanctions imposed by Washington on ICC members since the beginning of 2025, which currently target 11 judges and prosecutors.
