BETHLEHEM, August 20, 2025 (WAFA) – Israeli special forces on Wednesday evening detained Palestinian journalist Muath Amarneh while he was traveling on the road connecting the cities of Bethlehem and Hebron, according to a security source.
A security source told WAFA that a special unit intercepted Amarneh’s vehicle on the mentioned road, detained him, and took him to an unknown location.
On November 15, 2019, Israeli forces shot journalist Muath Amarneh with a rubber-coated metal bullet while he was covering confrontations in the town of Surif, northwest of Hebron, although he was wearing a clearly-marked press vest. The bullet struck his left eye, resulting in its loss and leaving shrapnel lodged in his skull.
Israeli forces detained Amarneh on October 16, 2023, and on October 29, he was placed under administrative detention.
During his detention, he was subjected to medical neglect despite his serious condition resulting from the injury and his struggle with diabetes. He was released on July 9, 2024, after spending nine months in custody.
