Foreign Ministry welcomes Jamaica's decision to officially recognize Palestine as a State

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, April 24, 2024 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates today welcomed Jamaica's decision to officially recognize Palestine as a State.

With this move, Jamaica joins 140 other member states of the United Nations in advocating for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Ministry praised Jamaica's decision to join the international movement that calls for the effective implementation of the two-state solution and respect for the right of the Palestinian people to live freely and in dignity in their independent state.

It further voiced its appreciation regarding statements made by the Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith, in which she called for countries to adhere to diplomatic solutions in accordance with international law instead of military solutions.

“The decision is aligned with Jamaica’s strong commitment to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, which seek to engender mutual respect and peaceful co-existence among states, as well as the recognition of the right of people to self-determination,“ the country’s ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

Smith urgently called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, protecting the Palestinian people, and intensifying efforts to deliver humanitarian aid into the Strip, mainly women and children.

The Ministry renewed its call on all countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to take this step as soon as possible.
