Newspapers Review: Dailies Highlight Findings on Arafat’s Death

RAMALLAH, November 9, 2013 (WAFA) – The press conference the Palestinian committee investigating death of Yasser Arafat was highlighted on the Saturday front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The three papers highlighted the committee’s statements that Arafat did not die a natural death and that he died of poison. They also highlighted the accusations leveled against Israel as the primary suspect in the assassination of Arafat.

Al-Quds included in its headlines statements by the head of the committee Tawfik Tirawi that they were looking for answers as to who killed Arafat in order to follow the issue in international and local courts.

It also quoted two other members of the committee, physician Abdullah al-Bashir and Minister of Justice Ali Muhanna, calling on France to submit as soon as possible its report on the tests its forensic team has conducted on Arafat’s remains.

The weekly anti-settlements, anti-wall demonstrations in the West Bank and the burial of the two Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers overnight near Nablus and Bethlehem were also highlighted on the front page of the dailies with al-Hayat al-Jadida making this story as its top front page article and the Arafat committee findings its second main story.

Al-Ayyam quoted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that Israel will not commit itself to any agreement with the Palestinians that does not protect its security and interests.

Al-Quds said efforts are underway to end the conflict between Hamas and Egypt.

The paper also said that the US has expressed concern over the rise in power of orthodox Jews in Israel.

The three papers said President Mahmoud Abbas starts Saturday a three-day visit to Egypt.

They also reported on the US and Israel losing their right to vote at UNESCO because they failed to pay their dues to the international organization. They also reported on the developments in Egypt and said two people were killed in the clashes between supporters and opponent of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi.
