Newspapers Review: Egypt’s Violence Dominates the Dailies

RAMALLAH, July 6, 2013 (WAFA) – Egypt’s turbulence even before the ousting of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, which came days after numerous demonstrations and clashes between the Islamic Brotherhood supporters and its opponents, dominated the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

Al-Quds front page headline read: “Islamic Brotherhood rejects ouster of Morsi. Violence sweeps the streets of Egyptian cities; deaths and casualties reported.”

Al-Ayyam printed photos of Morsi’s supporters carrying a wounded youth in front of the Republican Guards headquarters and another photo showing clashes between Morsi’s supporters and opponents.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Morsi’s supporters calling to remain in “squares” until the return of the ousted president.

Al-Ayyam quoted President Mahmoud Abbas saying from Beirut: “We stick by the two-state solution based on 1967 borders. There will be no peace without Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.”

The dailies reported on Abbas’ visit to Lebanon, during which he visited Palestinian refugees and camps and met with representatives of the PLO.

Al-Quds highlighted the dozens of injuries in the nonviolent weekly protests across the West Bank and a raid by settlers of Joseph Tomb in Nablus amid clashes between Palestinians and the settlers, who were protected by the army.

It featured a report by a European rights group which warned from a very likely humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip as a result to many setbacks such as the fuel crisis.
