RAMALLAH, November 22, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their Thursday issue the ceasefire understanding mediated by Egypt between Gaza and Israel which took effect at 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Al-Quds daily headline read: “Egypt mediates the ceasefire and war comes to an end.”
It printed photos highlighting the most prominent people involved in the ceasefire starting with a photo of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak and another of Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal during separate press conferences on ceasefire.
Al-Ayyam front page story said: “Gaza war death toll reached 161. Israel kills 28 Palestinians, including 17 children, before the implementation of the ceasefire.”
It printed a photo of a Palestinian child grieving the death of his young relative, Abdul Rahman Naim, in an airstrike targeting a building in Gaza.
A photo of Netanyahu, Barak and Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman with a sullen look on their faces during a press conference on ceasefire dominated half of al-Hayat al-Jadida’s front page with the caption: “The not so jolly trio.. Defeat on their faces.”
Al-Ayyam reported on the people of Gaza celebrating their “victory,” as came in the paper, after announcing the ceasefire.
The three papers featured President Mahmoud Abbas meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.
Abbas informed Clinton that the Palestinian Authority will head to the UN on November 29 to upgrade its status from observer entity to non-member state.
Al-Quds published the text of the ceasefire understanding between Israel and Gaza, which listed both the conditions and implementation mechanisms.
