Newspapers Review: Israeli Killing of 6 Palestinians Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, June 19, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Tuesday highlighted the Israeli killing of six Palestinians in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and in exchange of gunfire with Israeli army near southern borders with Egypt.

The main front page article of Al-Hayat al-Jadida newspaper featured the series of Israeli airstrikes targeting Beit Hanoun, north of the Gaza Strip, killing four Palestinians shortly after a group of fighters penetrated the Gaza-Sinai borders on Monday and attacked a group of Israeli workers in the area killing one. The Israeli army killed two Palestinians.

The daily reported that Israel announced state of high alert near the borders, and published a sequence of photos showing the Israeli army arresting an Arab traveling in a closed street in al-Naqab.

The prime headline in al-Ayyam newspaper said the Islamic Brotherhood in Egypt announced on Monday that its presidential candidate Mohammad Mursi has won the elections over his rival Ahmad Shafiq.

Al-Quds was the only newspaper to highlight Russian statements expressing concern over the current situation of the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that two Palestinians were killed while others were injured on Monday in clashes that broke out between Palestinians and the Lebanese army in Nahr al-Bared and Ain al-Hilweh refugee camps near Beirut.

The daily also reported on calls between President Mahmoud Abbas and the Lebanese President Michel Sleiman to alleviate the tension.
