Newspapers Review: Dailies Highlight Agreement on Elections, Government

RAMALLAH, May 21, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Tuesday highlighted an agreement reached on Monday in Cairo between Fatah and Hamas to start preparation for elections in the Palestinian Territory and formation of a new government under President Mahmoud Abbas.

Al-Quds said Abbas will start on May 27 talks on government formation while the Central Elections Commission will start on the same day work on voter registration in the Gaza Strip in preparation for presidential and legislative elections to be held within six months in all the Palestinian Territory.

The three papers focused as well on Israeli celebrations of the 45th anniversary for the occupation and annexation of East Jerusalem. Thousands of extremist Jews participated in provocative marches through Arab neighborhoods and streets in the occupied city.

The papers printed photos of Palestinians holding a counter march in East Jerusalem to protest the Israeli occupation and policies in the Arab city. The pictures show Israeli police assaulting participants in the protest.

Al-Ayyam featured Irish Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore speaking at EU meeting in Brussels threatening to boycott Israeli goods from the illegal settlements built in the occupied West Bank.

The dailies also featured Egyptian efforts to allow 18 released prisoners who were banished to Gaza after Gilad Shalit’s deal to return to the West Bank.
