NABLUS, February 10, 2011 (WAFA) – The official spokesman for the governorate of Nablus announced today the removal of Hawara and Beit Furik checkpoints in Nablus, north of the West Bank.
Israeli liaison (DCO) notified Major General Jibreen al-Bakri, governor of Nablus, that Israeli forces will be removing both checkpoints later today.
The governorate spokesman said that the checkpoint removal came as a result of continuous efforts by Governor Bakri, the Palestinian Authority and quartet envoy Tony Blair, because these checkpoints and others form an impediment to Palestinian residents' movement and to the Palestinian Authority’s efforts to develop the economic situation, improve the conditions of the governorate and encourage investment.
He also hopes that all checkpoints surrounding the governorate will be removed, particularly Al- Hamra checkpoint.
Eye witnesses reported that Israeli trucks started removing rocks from the Beit Furik checkpoint early today.
There are currently 13 military checkpoints, 39 earth mounds, 12 road blocks and 26 road gates preventing Palestinians from moving freely in the Nablus area, according to local media.
