NABLUS, February 10, 2011 (WAFA) – The administration of Israeli Megiddo prison in the West Bank took a series of harsh measures against Palestinian prisoners Thursday, breaking into detainees' tents and destroying their contents.
This action came as a result of Palestinian prisoners' refusal of the recent rule of the prison administration, which stipulates the compensation of prisoners with a small amount of money in case of destroying their personal belongings.
Palestinian prisoners said these belongings cannot be substituted for money as they are of personal nature and include photographs of their families.
The prisoners called for international humanitarian institutions to pressure the Israeli government to end its actions against prisoners.
Megiddo is a military prison camp located north of the West Bank and administered by the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Over 1,000 Palestinian detainees are held at Megiddo, including approximately 80 child prisoners aged 16-18. Prisoners are held in military tents divided amongst 5 different sections of the prison, with each section accommodating 8 tents.
