Israeli Police Arrests Activist in Anti-settlements Demonstration

JERUSALEM, February 7, 2011 (WAFA) - Israeli police arrested on Monday a female activist during a demonstration in front of West Jerusalem municipality building against plans to build a new settlement in Sheikh Jarrah.

The  building and planning committee of West Jerusalem municipality approved a plan for the construction of two Jewish settlements comprising of 13 housing units in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

Members of the Solidarity with Sheikh Jarrah movement held a demonstration in an attempt to prevent a decision by the municipality for building the 13 units.

The Israeli police claimed that the demonstration was illegal, therefore breaking it up and arresting the activist while interrogating the others.

According to the plan, the municipality will demolish two buildings in the neighborhood where Palestinian live and construct the new units for Jewish settlers. One building will have 10 housing units and the other three in the first stage in the construction.

The municipal committee discussed as well plans to seize Palestinian land south of Jerusalem in order to open a road to the settlement of Har Homa.
