High Court Says Public Schools in East Jerusalem Should Enroll Students

JERUSALEM, February 7, 2011 (WAFA) - The Israeli High Court said in a recent ruling that the Israeli Ministry of Education has five years, beginning today, to find solutions that would allow students living in East Jerusalem to be enrolled in public schools.

Otherwise, it said, the government will be requited to finance students in private schools in cases where they were not able to enroll in public schools.

The court ruling came after five Palestinian school students from East Jerusalem had petitioned the High Court demanding that the government finance their education similar to those in public schools, according to a report published Monday.

The students said in the petition that there are 40,000 students in East Jerusalem who had to join private schools and pay high tuition and fees after the Israeli Ministry of Education has rejected their request to join the free public schools due to shortage of space.
