President Meets King of Jordan in Amman

AMMAN, March 26, 2007, (WAFA)-President Mahmoud Abbas met on Monday with King of Jordan, Abdullah II, in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

During the meeting, the President briefed Abdullah on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the efforts exerted to end international siege imposed on the Palestinian people.

The President also highlighted efforts being exerted, particularly by King Abdullah and the US administration, to reinvigorate the peace process, denying that there were amendments to the Arab peace initiative.

He noted that any amendment to the initiative, which is accepted even by the Israelis, was not acceptable, saying that the Arab summit will decide mechanisms of activating the peace process.

For his part, King Abdullah reiterated Jordan's support to the Palestinian National Authority in its quest to rebuild national institutions, and lift the blockade imposed on the Palestinian people, saying that the Palestinian issue was the core of conflict in the region.

Peace and stability, he said will not be achieved unless a just and permanent solution is found to the Palestinian issue based on the Arab peace initiative, and UN resolutions that include the establishment of an independent Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.
