Nafah Calls for Releasing Female Prisoners in Israeli Jails

RAMALLAH, March 25, 2007, (WAFA)-The Nafha Society for the Defense of Prisoners' Rights called Sunday for releasing all Palestinian prisoners, particularly female prisoners being incarcerated in Israeli prisons.

In a statement, the Society said that 128 female prisoners are held behind the Israeli bares, including 62 being sentenced, 63 detained and 3 administratively detained. It pointed out that there are 95 single, 21 married, 4 widows, 7 divorced and one engaged, adding that 70 female prisoners imprisoned in al-Ramal and 58 others in Telmond Israeli jails.

"It should be noted that the Israeli prisons administration violate all human rights of female prisoners during interrogation. They sprayed more, than once, teargas on them and expose them to beatings and isolation, which could be up to a month. They also are prevented from daily break, in addition to the individual punishments, such as denial of family visits and the imposition of fines they might reach NIS 400 shekels as well as ongoing inspections by the department of rooms," according to the statement.

The Society revealed that there is a deliberate medical negligence imposed on the prisoners in an attempt to humiliate them. The prison's administration of female prisoners does not provide them any material or cleaning supplies and not give them any tools, or soap for bathing. They bought cleaning materials at their expense.

"There is a lack of clothes or footwear inside the prisons and the prison's administration did not allow entry of clothes into jails since five months ago," Nafha said.

The Society called on all the women of the world and all of the remaining conscience to stop the suffering of our prisoners and the Palestinian women inside Israeli jails.
