Erekat: New Government Represents Palestinian People
GAZA, March 18, 2007 (WAFA)- Head of the PLO Negotiations Affairs Department Saeb Erekat said Sunday the new national unity government represents all the Palestinian people, with its members were not voicing their political parties' positions.
Erekat told reporters that everyone had to be aware that the Palestinian national unity government did not belong to Hamas, Fatah or independents, as it was the government of all the Palestinians.
"By having been sworn-in before the Palestinian Legislative Council and President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday, those cabinet members' political positions can not necessarily express their parties' stances as they have commitments towards the Palestinian people," he said.
Erekat, who is also a member of the Legislative Council, added that the new government should be part of international relations and international and Arab legitimacy by meeting the commitments of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and accepting President Abbas' program announced in his speech at the council on Saturday.
The new Palestinian government's plank includes fresh political, economic, security, educational and agricultural activities and well as anti-corruption efforts, Erekat pointed out.
On the coming Arab summit in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, he said President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haniya would attend the summit.
