Arab Permanent Representatives Meet in Cairo
CAIRO, February 28, 2007 (WAFA) -- The 127th Session of the Council of the Arab League began Wednesday at the level of Arab permanent representatives.
The session was held under the chairmanship of Tunisian Representative Al-Habib Kaabash, with the attendance of Arab representatives to the Arab League.
Addressing the meeting, the Tunisian representative said the session would mull over the agenda of the council's meeting to be held on Sunday. The 20-item agenda will involve diverse issues of common Arab action.
He underlined the significance of such meetings in light of several changes and challenges in the Arab region, saying that the ongoing session would discuss the agenda of the coming Arab summit in Riyadh.
The proposed agenda involves the agenda of the forthcoming Arab summit in Riyadh and a report by the league's secretary-general on the implementation of resolutions during the period between both sessions, and a call on Arab countries to speedily endorse the basic system of the Arab Security and Peace Council, which was approved during the recent Khartoum summit.
The council will be put in effect once seven countries at least endorse it, given the fact that only Syria has endorsed it so far.
However, the Tunisian representative said Egypt had asked for including a new item in the agenda, dealing with the Palestinian cause and the Arab-Israeli conflict. The item is pertinent to stupendous efforts by Zionist and Jewish organizations in South Africa and some other African and Asian countries to make their governments and public opinions reverse their attitudes towards the Palestinian cause.
Furthermore, he said, the session will discuss Arab support for the Palestinian state budget, noting that total sums of money received by the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) from Arab nations had hit USD 380 million out of the total annual amount of USD 660 million.
A biannual report on the activities of the head office and regional bureaus regarding boycott against Israel, the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and Comoros would be atop the agenda too. The risks of Israeli nuclear armaments on Arab and international security and peace, Arab peaceful nuclear development and Arab relations with Africa, Europe, China and Turkey will be discussed too.
