Knesset Rejects a Bill to Close Dimona Reactor
NAZARETH, March 18, 2004, (WAFA)- Israeli Knesset( Parliament) rejected Wednesday night a bill submitted by Israeli-Arab Knesset members, to close the nuclear reactor in Dimona.... Knesset Speaker Rivlin said that the bill, calling for the closure of Israel's nuclear reactor in Dimona was defeated by a 6-65.... The three (Arab Hadash party) Israeli-Arab members of (Knessest) Issam Makhoul, Mohammed Barakeh and Dr. Ahmed al-Tibi, submitted a bill demanding the Israeli government to close its nuclear reactor for environmental hazards.... The Arab members said that the Dimona nuclear reactor's life expectancy is about 40 years, after which the number of malfunctions rises harshly, adding that they are also concerned about health deterioration of plant's workers.... Makhoul has long been an opponent to the Israeli nuclear programme. He has been active to free the convicted Israeli nuclear scientist Mordechai Vanunu... Vanunu has been kidnapped by Israeli intelligence from Italy in 1986 as he published in the London-Based Sunday Times an article revealing the dangers of the Israeli nuclear reactor on the region... He was charged with "treasury" and sentenced for 18 years... The Dimona nuclear reactor is in the Negv Desert which is inhabited mostly by Arabs. . Several times the Israeli Government has been cornered in the International political arena because it has repeatedly refused to sign the nuclear weapons non-proliferation international treaty....
