Newspapers Review: Corona, demolition orders and death of prisoner focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, July 07, 2020 (WAFA) – Each of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today highlighted on its front page a different topic.

Al-Ayyam highlighted one death from coronavirus and 64 new cases in Palestine, while al-Quds highlighted the Israeli demolition orders against 30 houses and structures in East Jerusalem‘s Isawiyya neighborhood for construction without permit, and al-Hayat al-Jadida said the prisoner, Sadi Gharabli, from Gaza, has died in Israeli prison due to medical negligence.

All the papers shared the same news topics even though at different spots of their front page.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also highlighted remarks Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh made at the cabinet meeting yesterday, stressing in the headline his call on Israel to close the borders with the West Bank and on the United Nations to monitor movement in and out of these borders in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease.

The paper also reported on the Arab-Chinese cooperation virtual meeting, which expressed opposition to Israeli annexation of occupied Palestinian land.

It said UNESCO adopted two resolutions on Palestine.

Al-Quds, in a report from its Washington correspondent, quoted the Washington Post saying that recognizing the state of Palestine is the right answer for Israel‘s annexation plan.

It also quoted the UN Special Repertoire on Palestine saying the Israeli occupation will not end with an international intervention that would pressure Israel to shoulder its responsibilities.

Al-Ayyam said Palestinians protesting Israeli settlement activities clashed with soldiers in the north of the West Bank.

It said the results of the general high school matriculation exams that will allow students to continue higher education will be announced on Saturday.
