Newspapers Review: Coronavirus toll, annexation plan focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, June 30, 2020 (WAFA) – The high number of coronavirus cases in Palestine and the Israeli annexation plan continued to hit the front page headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Quds said Jerusalem had yesterday its highest number of cases since the outbreak of the disease.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the efforts by the government to fight the outbreak and said violators of the health measures will be penalized.

Al-Ayyam quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying that easing the restriction depends on decline in the number of cases.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted President Mahmoud Abbas reiterating his opposition to the American so-called deal of the century and the Israeli annexation plan, while al-Ayyam quoted Israel’s Defense Minister Benny Gantz saying that July 1 is not a sacred day for annexation.

Al-Ayyam said Israelis began surveying the Bedouin communities in the Jerusalem area in preparation for the annexation.

It quoted the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, saying that annexation is illegal and warning it could be devastating to the entire region, while al-Quds said the Israeli foreign ministry has attacked Bachelet for her comments against annexation.

Al-Quds said 129 US organizations have called for returning the US embassy in Israel back to Tel Aviv.

It said the US and Israel are in disagreement over announcing annexation in a one lump sum.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Shtayyeh has called on the British government to recognize the state of Palestine.
