Newspapers Review: Vote at UNSC today on deal of century highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, February 11, 2020 (WAFA) – The anticipated vote at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today on the American plan known as the deal of the century was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

While al-Quds daily said in its main front-page headline that the vote on the resolution has been postponed, al-Ayyam said the US exerted intense pressure at UNSC to obstruct the Palestinian resolution.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas is going to address the special UNSC session, adding that Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said the draft resolution submitted by the Arab Group and the Non-Aligned Movement includes a condemnation of the US over its plan.

It said a big rally is planned for today in Ramallah in support of Abbas and against the American plan.

On the oppressive Israeli measures in the occupied Palestinian territories, al-Quds said the Israeli army shut down entrances to several Palestinian villages in the Ramallah and Nablus areas and obstructed movement of people in these villages.

Al-Ayyam said clashes broke out with Israeli soldiers in Arroub refugee camp in the south of the West Bank and in the Abu Dis schools’ area near Jerusalem.

It said Israel banned the Palestinian Authority’s governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Ghaith, from entering the West Bank or meeting Palestinian officials for six months, and banned many others from reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem for worship.

It said Israeli premier, Benjamin Netanyahu, said during a tour of the illegal settlements in the West Bank that the annexation of many parts of the occupied territories is going to be done in coordination and agreement with the US administration.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israel seized money of former prisoners from Jerusalem.

It also said the African Unity summit expressed support for the Palestinians against the US deal of the century.

Al-Quds said the Palestinian government is going to help farmers affected by the Israeli ban on export of Palestinian agricultural products.

It said an Egyptian security delegation held talks with Hamas and other factions in Gaza on ending the intra-Palestinian division, easing the 13-years-long Israel blockade and the deal of the century.

It also said Israel sentenced Sheikh Raed Salah, former head of the Islamic Movement in Israel, to 28 months in prison for his role in defying Israeli measures against Al-Aqsa Mosque.
