Newspapers review: Killing of three Palestinians in West Bank focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Friday, February 07, 2020 (WAFA) – The killing of three Palestinians by Israeli military gunfire within 24 hours amid heightened tensions in separate areas of the occupied West Bank dominated the front page headlines in Friday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The dailies reported that Israeli forces killed three Palestinians in the West Bank cities of Jenin and Jerusalem.

Al-Quds added that scores of Palestinians were injured from Israeli gunfire during confrontations and clashes across the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam elaborated that Israeli forces carried out a raid and demolition campaign across the West Bank, injuring dozens of Palestinians and causing others to suffocate from tear gas.

It also reported that Israeli bulldozers demolished a house belonging to the family of Ahmad Qanbaa, a Palestinian imprisoned by Israel over his alleged role in a shooting attack that killed a settler two years ago.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that 14 Israeli soldiers were injured when a Palestinian motorist drove into them in West Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that another soldier was shot in a drive-by shooting attack to the north of Ramallah city.

Presidency spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh was reported in the dailies denouncing the dangerous Israeli escalation, blaming it on the recently-announced US plan, dubbed “deal of the century”.

According to al-Quds, President Mahmoud Abbas and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on the sidelines of the United Nations Security Council session to voice their rejection of the so-called “deal of the century”.

It said that the Israel has decided to boost its forces in the occupied West Bank.

The dailies spotlighted President Abbas’ statements during a meeting with local popular movements and civil society groups at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.

Abbas was reported stating: “We will not betray trust nor give an iota of our rights enshrined in international legitimacy.”

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida reiterating: “We will never accept a state without having East Jerusalem as the eternal capital for the State of Palestine”.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida addaed that Abbas received a phone call from Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide.

Søreide was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stressing her country’s position in support of achieving peace on the basis of the two-state solution and resolutions of international legitimacy.

Moreover, Premier Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highly appreciating the position of Jordan’s King Abdullah II in rejection of the so-called “deal of the century”.

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu was reported in al-Quds claiming: “In the past we used to give and the Palestinians would get. Now we are the ones receiving and the Palestinians are doing the giving.”

According to al-Quds, Palestinian Islamic committees in Jerusalem, the Joint Arab Follow-up Committee and Joint List Party urged Palestinians to unite.

Senior chemistry professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem Amiram Goldblum was reported in al-Quds admitting that all settlers in the West Bank are terrorists and Israel is an apartheid state.

According to al-Ayyam, Israeli warplanes pounded farmlands in the vicinity of Rafah border crossing and sewage network in the besieged Gaza Strip.

It said that Israeli intelligence officers broke into St. George’s School, known as al-Mutran School, in Jerusalem to disrupt an agreement signing ceremony.

The Palestinian Ministry of Economy was reported announcing that the government‘s decision to ban Israeli vegetables, fruits, juices, mineral water and carbonated drinks into the Palestinian markets came into effect yesterday.
