Newspapers review: Seizure of Palestinian land north of Ramallah focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, August 21, 2019 (WAFA) – The seizure of Palestinian land located to the north of Ramallah by Israeli settlers dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported that Israeli settlers seized 150 dunums of land belonging to a cluster of Palestinian villages, located to the north of the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida elaborated that Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers, north of Ramallah, and fenced off 150 dunums of lands.

On the other hand, al-Quds highlighted the 1969 arson attack against Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in its main news item.

It reported the Jerusalem Islamic Religious Endowment authorities warning that the mosque compound remains under increasing threat.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Palestinian national parties urge the Arabs and Muslims worldwide to confront Israel’s scheme to divide the mosque compound.

Yet, al-Hayat al-Jadida’s main article shed light on the blatant medical negligence of Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israeli forces cracked down on a rally staged by 300 Palestinian lawyers at Beit Hanoun/Erez crossing to protest 12-year crippling blockade on the seaside enclave.

They added that scores of Palestinians were injured by Israeli military gunfire as 1,200 Israeli Jewish settlers forced their way to the Islamic shrine of Joseph’s Tomb near the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

Al-Quds said that members of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, who are affiliated to the Joint Arab List, visited the Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiyeh to ascertain Israeli practices against the neighborhood residents.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces detained 18 Palestinians from the West Bank, including a woman at Allenby Bridge with Jordan.

Al-Ayyam highlighted a Palestine Prisoner’s Society report documenting that Israeli police rounded up over 500 Palestinians from Jerusalem in July 2019.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam spotlighted Israeli media reports relating an Israeli senior diplomatic source’s first-hand testimony corroborating allegations that Israel is pursuing a policy of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza.

Al-Quds highlighted in this regard reactions condemning the Israeli scheme to displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to several states.

Al-Ayyam reported Israeli ‘Internal Security’ Minister Gilad Erdan saying that the Israeli cabinet discussed serious proposals to encourage the mass emigration of Palestinians from Gaza.

Al-Quds said that the Palestinian Center of Burj Al-Laqlaq in Jerusalem petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court against Erdan’s decision to shut down a tournament.

Al-Ayyam said that 1,310,000 Palestinians students are expected to start the new school year on Sunday August 25.

It said that Palestinian factions in Gaza are considering a new proposal to achieve reconciliation.

Regionally, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri slamming the US-touted Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, as a “blatant attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause.”

According to al-Quds, the Jordanian Parliament calls for severing ties with Israel.
