Fatah official says truce agreement between Hamas and Israel a national betrayal

RAMALLAH, August 15, 2018 (WAFA) – A senior Fatah official Wednesday described the proposed truce between Israel and Hamas as a national betrayal.

“The truce reached between Hamas and Israel a few days ago is a betrayal of the Palestinian people and its national cause," said Azzam al-Ahmad, member of both Fatah Central Committee and the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee.

He told Voice of Palestine radio that what is happening now is not negotiations, but a carnival to announce the agreement, indicating that he asked the Egyptians to avoid coinciding the announcement of the truce between Hamas and Israel, which Israel has started to implement, with the meeting of the Palestinian Central Council that is scheduled to convene in Ramallah on Wednesday evening.

He said that the Palestinian leadership does not have time for such useless carnivals, pointing out that not all factions are involved in this agreement and that there were factions involved he has not heard of before.

Ahmad stressed that all of the PLO factions agree that any agreement for calm should be reached with the PLO similar to what happened after the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip in 2014.

On the reconciliation, Ahmad said that several meetings were held, the last of which was last week, which positively dealt with the Egyptian paper that talks about three points:  calm, reconciliation and projects.

He said that Hamas had told Egypt that it wants to go to Istanbul to study the paper and then send its response to the Egyptians, which it later sent and was a rejection of the Egyptian paper.

Regarding the participation of Hamas in the meeting of the Central Council, Ahmad expressed regret that the 10 members of Hamas from the Legislative Council invited to this meeting would not participate. “This proves that the mentality of division is still in control of all of Hamas practices until this moment,” he said.

He also expressed regret that the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) is not going to attend the Central Council meeting, describing this decision to be wrong. He said that those who want to implement the decisions of the Central and National Councils and have ideas and criticisms should do this within the framework of this organization that encompasses all the people and its forces.

He said the DFLP actively participated from the start until the end in preparing the report that will be submitted to the Central Council.
