Waqf director, a Jordanian government official, summoned by Israeli police

JERUSALEM, Saturday, August 24, 2019 (WAFA) – The Israeli intelligence summoned today the director of the Department of Islamic Waqf (Endowments) in occupied Jerusalem, Azzam Khatib.

The Jerusalem Islamic Waqf said in a statement that Khatib, who is a Jordanian government official, was summoned for questioning by the Israeli intelligence.

The summons is believed related to the recent escalation at Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site, by Jewish extremists and attempts by the Waqf to prevent the extremists, supported by the Israeli police and government, from changing its status as a Muslim-only holy site.

Jordan is considered the custodian over the Muslim and Christian holy places in Jerusalem, including the Islamic Waqf department whose staff are Jordanian-government employees.
