Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight protests in West Bank, Gaza; Algeria winning Africa Cup

RAMALLAH, Saturday, July 20, 2019 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted today on their front page the weekly Friday protests in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and Algeria winning the Africa Cup,

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam made the protests their main front page story with both papers reporting over 120 Palestinians injured from Israeli gunfire or teargas in both sections of Palestine, but particularly on the Gaza border with Israel, where the weekly March of Return protests have been taking place, and in the village of Kufr Qaddoum in the West Bank where last week a 10-year-old boy was shot and critically injured in the head by an Israeli army sniper.

Al-Ayyam also said that Palestinians in Jerusalem held the Friday prayer at an area in Sur Baher neighborhood where dozens of homes are under threat of demolition by Israel because they were built near its separation barrier place on Sur Baher land. The Friday prayer was also held in Silwan, also where a number of Palestinian homes are under threat of takeover by settlers.

These protest prayers were also reported in al-Quds.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported on the protests but lower on its front page while it made the Algeria win of the Africa Cup is main front page story focusing on President Abbas and many others watching the game from his Ramallah headquarters. The paper said Palestinians were overjoyed with Algeria’s win.

Al-Quds reported on the game in which Algeria defeated Senegal 1-0 in the final game played in Cairo last night and al-Ayyam mentioned it in a box on the top right corner of its front page.

In other news, al-Ayyam highlighted the tension between Iran and the United Kingdom after Iran was said to have taken control of two British oil tankers sailing in the Arabian Gulf, and tension between Iran and the United States, which claimed to have downed an Iranian drone while Iran denying the US claim.

It also quoted Palestinian official, Saeb Erekat, saying that the Palestinian Authority is against American plans to settle Palestinian refugees in their host countries.

Al-Quds quoted Erekat describing as a lie allegation that Palestine is isolated in the international arena.

The paper also said Jewish fanatics spray painted racist slogans and vandalized vehicles in the Arab town of al-Jish in the Upper Galilee in northern Israel.

It also said in a story by its Washington correspondent that US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has submitted a bill to Congress supporting the principle of boycott of Israel.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Omar saying she is going to remain a nightmare for US President Donald Trump.

The paper also quoted the deputy chairman of the Belgium parliament saying Israel should be punished for its racist policies against the Palestinians.
