Newspapers review: Death of Palestinian following Israeli assault focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Thursday, June 20, 2019 (WAFA) – The death of a Palestinian from wounds sustained following an Israeli assault two weeks ago in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Shufat refugee camp dominated the front page headlines in Thursday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The dailies reported that Mousa Abu Mayala succumbed to his wounds he had sustained after being attacked by undercover Israeli forces in Jerusalem.

Abu Mayala, 60, was assaulted by undercover Israeli forces, known as Musta‘ribeen, in the chest as he was standing outside his house in the Jerusalem neighborhood. He was rushed to hospital where he remained until he was pronounced dead.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli police injured several Palestinians in a raid that triggered confrontations in the Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Eissawya.

They added that Israeli settlers carried out attacks against Palestinians and their property in different locations in the West Bank.

The dailies elaborated that Israeli military bulldozers leveled Palestinian lands in Battir town, west of Bethlehem, and in the villages of Burin and Madama, south of Nablus.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian house under construction in Jericho city.

The stifling financial crisis gripping the Palestinian Authority after the suspension of hundreds of millions of dollars of US aid and Israel’s withholding of part of the Palestinian tax revenues also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Quds said in this regard that the Palestinian Authority requests financial support from Arab countries amidst an worsening financial crisis.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Governor of the Palestine Monetary Authority Azzam Shawwa stating that the government would continue to pay 50 to 60 percent of the monthly payroll of the civil servants for the upcoming few months.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, the Israeli Jerusalem District court allows the Siyam family 20 days to evict their home in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, dismissing their appeal and ruling in favor of the Elad settler group.

Elad is a shadowy settler organization that seeks to forcefully displace Palestinians from Jerusalem in line with the policy championed by successive Israeli governments to Judaize Jerusalem.

US envoy Jason Greenblatt was reported in al-Quds tweeting that the US “has not and will not” pressure Jordan to give up its role as the custodian of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

He was also reported in the three dailies accusing Fatah movement of sabotaging the US-touted Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, which is designed to force Palestinians into submission to perpetual Israeli dominance.

Member of Fatah Executive Committee Azzam al-Ahmad was reported in al-Quds stating that an Egyptian security delegation is set to meet President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah before visiting Gaza.

He was also reported in the three dailies claiming that that there were positive developments regarding the intra-Palestinian reconciliation.

Chairman of the Qatari Committee for Gaza Reconstruction Muhammad al-Emadi was reported in al-Quds and al-Ayyam that Qatari grants would be distributed to 60,000 impoverished families in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Senior official in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Hanan Ashrawi was reported in al-Quds slamming the upcoming US-led economic workshop in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, as a US attempt to bypass the Palestinian people’s historical rights.

According to al-Ayyam, President Abbas is scheduled to chair a Fatah Central Committee’s meeting on Saturday, June 22, 2019.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida urging Europe and Romania to take action against Israeli settlers holding European and Romanian citizenships.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Arab Parliament stressing the need to support President Abbas’ vision to re-launch the peace process under international sponsorship.
