Newspapers Review: Deal of century and its implications, destruction of land focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, June 18, 2019 (WAFA) – The American so-called deal of the century and its implications as well as Israeli destruction of Palestinian land and property in the occupied territory were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Fatah has called for large scale participation in activities against the deal of the century, particularly the upcoming economic workshop planned to be held in Bahrain on June 24.

Al-Quds said US envoy Jason Greenblatt, author of the deal of the century, backed statements by the US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, in which he supported Israeli annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank. However, it said in a boxed story by its Washington correspondent that American officials have denied Israel has annexation plans.

It said Israel will not participate with an official delegation in the Bahrain meeting, rather only businessmen.

Meanwhile, al-Ayyam focused its main front page story on the Israeli measures in various areas of the occupied West Bank such as destruction of structures, razing of land and cutting down trees.

It also published several stories on various Israeli acts in occupied East Jerusalem, such as forcing a resident of Silwan neighborhood to demolish own home, naming streets in Silwan after Jewish rabbis, approving the construction of a cable car over the old city and a report by the Israeli rights group, B’Tselem, saying the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem is going to destroy an entire Palestinian neighborhood to insure Jewish majority in the occupied city.

The paper said the European Court has obliged France to label Israeli settlement products.

Al-Quds said distribution of the Qatari money to Gaza has been postponed as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh met the Qatari envoy in Gaza.

It said the Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, has announced securing $350 million for 2019 but the deficit remains at $211 million.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Palestinian cabinet supported a call by President Mahmoud Abbas to hold elections and said it was ready to implement it.
