JENIN, Wednesday, June 12, 2019 (WAFA) – Wife of a Palestinian prisoner impregnated by sperm smuggled from her imprisoned husband gave birth to a second child.
Filistin, wife of the prisoner Samer Mahroum, said she gave birth at Jenin Hospital in the north of the West Bank to a healthy baby girl she named Yasmin, who was born by artificial insemination using a sperm smuggled by her husband from his prison cell. Yasmin is her second child born. Her first born, Adam, was born in 2016 also from a smuggled sperm.
Mahroum, from Jenin, was released from prison in 1986 in a prisoners’ exchange deal with Israel after serving 27 years in prison. After his release, he got married to Filistin but was re-arrested five years after his release before having any children.
Since Palestinian political prisoners are not allowed to be with their wives, they resort to smuggling sperms so that their wives can bear children before it becomes too late for them to do that, especially if their husbands are serving long prison terms.
