Newspapers review: Shooting Palestinian security officer in Nablus focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, June 12, 2019 (WAFA) – The shooting of a Palestinian security officer by Israeli military gunfire in the northern West Bank city of Nablus dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds reported that Israeli forces opened fire on a Palestinian Preventive Security headquarters in Nablus, injuring an officer.

Al-Ayyam said that in addition to the security officer, a Palestinian civilian was injured from Israeli military gunfire during the raid into Nablus.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida slammed the shooting of the Palestinian security officer as a “flagrant aggression”.

Al-Quds reported the White House senior advisor Jared Kushner stating that Egypt and Jordan will attend the US-led ‘Peace to Prosperity’ economic workshop, scheduled on June 25-26 in Bahrain’s capital, Manama.

Al-Ayyam reported a senior White House official revealing that Egypt, Jordan and Morocco will attend the US-led workshop in Manama.

Member of the PLO’s Executive Committee Azzam al-Ahmad was reported in al-Quds stating that the participation of Jordan and Egypt in the workshop would be ‘token’ or ‘symbolic’.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israel has decided to reduce the permitted fishing zone off Gaza’s coast to six nautical miles.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was reported in al-Quds stating that solving the Palestinian question would open new avenues towards peace and development.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam stating that his country was exerting efforts to support the Palestinian Authority and its role in the Gaza Strip.

El-Sisi made his latter remarks during a meeting with the President of the World Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder in Cairo.

The dailies spotlighted the latest spate of demolitions of Palestinian property in Jerusalem, Hebron and Beit Jala.

They added that Israeli forces uprooted hundreds of olive trees to the east of Tammun town, south of Tubas city, in the northern West Bank.

According to al-Quds, Sobhi Al-Jdeily, a Palestinian paramedic who succumbed to his wounds from Israeli gunfire in the besieged Gaza Strip, was laid to his rest.

Al-Jdeily, 36, was seriously wounded after being shot by Israeli forces while working with the Red Crescent in the northern Gaza Strip. He died in a Hebron hospital.

Chairman of the Palestinian National Council Salim Zanoun was reported in al-Quds explaining that preparations are under way to convene the Central Council in a timely manner, likely to be held after the US-led economic workshop in Manama.

According to al-Ayyam, Israel’s Supreme Court rejected the appeal of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and approved the sale of three strategically located properties in Jerusalem’s Old City to Ateret Cohanim settler group, which has stirred public ire.

The dailies reported the Palestinian Higher Presidential Committee of Churches Affairs demanding the world to help safeguard ecclesiastical heritage in Jerusalem.

The US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus was reported in al-Quds pushing back on the US ambassador to Israel David Friedman’s comments suggesting that Israel has the right to annex at least parts of the occupied West Bank.

Ortagus was quoted: “the ]US[ administration’s position on the settlements has not changed.”

Finance Minister Shukri Bishara was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing that the government is considering reducing the income and added value taxes in addition to subsidize basic commodities.
