RAMALLAH, Thursday, February 28, 2019 (WAFA) – The Israeli military detention raids in Jerusalem and various other parts of the West Bank dominated the front page headlines in Thursday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.
The dailies reported that Israeli forces detained member of Fatah Revolutionary Council Zakaria Zubeidi and Tarek Barghout, an attorney who works for the Prisoners Affairs Commission, during a raid into Ramallah city.
Zubeidi was a leading member of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Fatah’s armed wing, during the second intifada, but was later given amnesty by Israel in a deal reached with the Palestinian Authority.
Al-Quds added that children of a local kindergarten suffered the effects of tear gas fired by Israeli soldiers during the raid.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that a total of 36 Palestinians, including Zubeidi and Barghout, were detained during multiple Israeli military raids across the West Bank.
Among the 36 detainees, al-Quds elaborated, 24 Palestinians were rounded up by Israeli military police during large-scale raids across East Jerusalem.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Palestinian presidency responding to the extensive raids that resulted in the detention of scores of Fatah members, particularly from Jerusalem.
The presidency was reported stating that the Israeli policy would not undermine the Palestinian people’s steadfastness and the leadership’s commitment to the fixed principles.
On the other hand, al-Ayyam opted to spotlight New York Times’ Kusher Met with Saudi Crown Prince to Push Mideast Peace Plan.
It reported US sources saying that the US plan, dubbed deal of the century, omits the two-state solution as well as the Palestinian refugees’ right to return, and focuses on investments of billions of dollars to the West Bank and Gaza.
Echoing the same concerns about the plan, al-Quds printed an analysis detailing how the plan omits the two-state solution and the Palestinian refugees’ right to return.
Additionally, al-Quds reported that Israel has decided to release Jerusalem Governor, Adnan Gheith, on conditions.
Spotlighting the situation in Jerusalem, al-Quds reported that Israel has banned Khadija Khweis, a local teacher, entry into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for six months.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added that the New York-born extremist Israeli lawmaker Yehuda Glick lead a settlers’ intrusion into flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Glick is a leading Israeli settler who has gained notoriety for campaigning for replacing Al-Aqsa Mosque with a Jewish third temple.
They added that the Israeli police commander of the Jerusalem district and police officers forced their way into Bab al-Rahma inside the mosque compound.
Al-Ayyam said that Palestinians are concerned about new Israeli attack against Bab al-Rahma as far-right Israeli Jewish settler groups have called for shuttering the compound tomorrow.
Moreover, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah announcing that the Palestinian Authority has rejected the first 2019 monthly tax transfer from Israel after Israel slashed 42 million shekels.
The 42 million shekels equals the portion designated for financial support to the bereaved families of Palestinians killed by Israel and others in Israeli jails.
Presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh was reported in the dailies stating that President Mahmoud Abbas was ready for a tripartite meeting with Israel in Moscow should Russian President Vladimir Putin calls for one.
Furthermore, al-Ayyam highlighted a report by the London daily al-Arabi al-Jadid indicating that a three-dimensional prisoner swap deal is being made and facilitated with Egyptian mediation.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestine’s ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Masnour warning against Israeli escalation against the Palestinian people with elections approaching.
They added that the stormy weather caused a part of Israel’s wall in the East Jerusalem refugee camp of Shufat to collapse.
President Abbas was reported in the two dailies extending his condolences to his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi over the killing of 20 Egyptians in a fatal Cairo train fire.
Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Chairman of the PLO’s Refugees Affairs Department Ahmad Abu Holi stating the EU translated its positions supporting to the Palestinian people into action through providing €82 million to the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
