Newspapers review: President’s remarks on future peace initiatives, prisoners’ stipends

 

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, February 27, 2019 (WAFA) – The remarks of President Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor Nabil Abu Rudeineh on plans to solve the Palestinian question and stipends of Palestinians killed and imprisoned by Israel hit the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam reported Abu Rudenieh stating that any plan that does not result in the establishment of the ]independent[ Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is doomed to fail.

Abu Rudeineh made his remarks responding to US President Donald Trump’s advisor Jared Kushner, who said during an interview with Sky New Arabia on Monday that that US-proposed Mideast plan would address all core issues, including borders, with freedom as one of its main principles.

Abu Rudeineh was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that Jerusalem and the stipends of the families of Palestinians killed and imprisoned by Israel remains a top priority for the Palestinian leadership.

On the other hand, al-Quds gave opted to highlight that Israeli forces shot and injured four Palestinians who participated in nighttime protests, east of Gaza, a news item that was also covered in the other two dailies.

Elaborating on the situation in Gaza, al-Quds reported that Israeli military vehicles infiltrated into Palestinian lands in eastern Beit Hanoun town in the northern besieged Gaza Strip.

It added that Israeli forces opened fire towards Palestinian farmers in Khan Younes district in the southern Gaza Strip.

According to al-Quds, Israeli troops attacked hundreds of Palestinian workers gathering at the narrow corridor of Checkpoint 300, north of Bethlehem city, causing dozens to suffocate from excessive tear gas inhalation.

Spotlighting escalating tensions in Jerusalem, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel and a number of Jewish settlers forced their way into flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The dailies said that a settler spray-painted racist anti-Palestinian slogans on the external side of Bab al-Rahma Gate.

Al-Ayyam reported the Religious Endowments (Waqf) Authorities of Jerusalem warning that far-right Jewish settlers’ aspirations to seize Bab al-Rahma have increased since 2016.

Moreover, the dailies reported that thousands of Palestinians continued to rally throughout various Palestinian districts in support of President Abbas.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) factions slammed Hamas’ attempts to undermine the legitimacy of Abbas and the PLO as a threat to the Palestinian national project.

The same daily went on to report Secretary-General of the PLO’s Executive Committee Saeb Erekat arguing that Hamas has uncovered its true face as a tool for the implementation of US-proposed Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century.

Besides, al-Quds said that United Nations investigators addressed a letter to Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu urging him to protect human rights defenders, especially B’Tselem staff.

Fearing escalation, al-Ayyam revealed that Netanyahu is looking for a new mechanism to transfer funds to Gaza.

Al-Quds published a report titled What are the real reasons behind the prolonged visit of the head of Hamas’ political bureau Ismail Haniyeh to Cairo?

Al-Ayyam said that a Palestinian photo-journalist faces expulsion from Jerusalem.

Israeli occupation authorities are seeking to expel Mustafa Kharouf, 32, who works as a photo-journalist for Anadolu Agency, from East Jerusalem.
