Newspaper Review: Forming of investigation committee into minister’s comments focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Sunday, January 20, 2019 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on Sunday on the Palestinian government’s decision to set up a ministerial committee to look into statements by Minister of Local Government, Hussein al-Araj, regarding the leaders of the anti-social security protests.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said government spokesman Yusuf al-Mahmoud said in a statement that Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah decided to immediately form a ministerial commission of inquiry to investigate the reasons for Araj’s statements and the subsequent reactions.

On a different subject, al-Hayat al-Jadida said Hamdallah arrived in the Lebanese capital Beirut to take part in the convening Arab Economic Summit.

Al-Quds said Hamdallah has taken with him an inclusive portfolio to the Arab Economic Summit in Beirut involving a plan for Palestine to economically disengage from Israel.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds quoted Israeli Channel 13 as saying that Israeli occupation authorities decided to ban UNRWA-run schools from operating in occupied East Jerusalem as of the next academic year.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) organized a mass wedding ceremony in Sidon, southern Lebanon, of about 400 couples from Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. The ceremony was attended by PM Rami Hamdallah.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat said the leadership will not allow the US to make any adjustments to the Arab Peace Initiative.
