Syrian rights group in the occupied Golan Heights complains Israel to a UN committee

MAJDAL SHAMS, Tuesday, January 15, 2019 (WAFA) – A human rights group based in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights told the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in a report submitted on Monday that Israel has not fulfilled its basic responsibilities as outlined in the committee’s covenant.

Al-Marsad, the only human rights group in the occupied Golan, said in a press release that it submitted the report after the UN committee that discusses Israel’s failure to uphold its obligations under the committee’s covenant has called for additional information from civil society organizations regarding Israel’s implementation of the articles of its covenant in the occupied territory.

The UN committee is scheduled to review Israel’s Fourth Periodic Report in March and adopt a “list of issues” in relation to Israel’s report at that time, it said.

Al-Marsad’s report focuses on how Israel has failed to fulfill its basic responsibilities under the covenant in the Golan.

Specifically, the report outlines, in detail, how Israel’s discriminatory policies have led to violations of the covenant’s Article 1 on right to self-determination and the utilization of natural resources; Article 2 on prohibition on discrimination; Article 6 right to work; Article 7 right to the enjoyment of just and favorable working conditions; Article 11 right to an adequate standard of living; Article 13 right to education; and Article 15 right to cultural expression.

“Al-Marsad will continue to engage with the Committee as it meets to review Israel’s Fourth Periodic Report,” it said, adding it “hopes that during this review the Committee will, for the first time, take into consideration and address Israel’s blatant human rights abuses in the Golan.”
