Newspapers Review: Three dead, dozens wounded during Gaza border protests, say dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, December 22, 2018 (WAFA) – Three Palestinians were shot dead [a fourth died of wounds early Saturday] and dozens were wounded during the weekly Friday March of Return protests on the Gaza border with Israel, reported the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

In the West Bank, dozens were also injured during the weekly protests against the Israeli occupation and seizure of Palestinian land for Jewish settlement expansion.

In other news, the three papers highlighted what the Abbasi family in Jerusalem had said that its son, Qassem, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers in Ramallah on Thursday in cold blood.

Al-Quds said that as a result of this incident, the army gave orders to its soldiers not to shoot at Palestinians if their lives were not in danger.

The paper also said that the Abu Rmeileh family was ordered by the Israeli West Jerusalem municipality to evict its home in Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem after an outer wall collapsed as a result of digs by Jewish settler groups below its house.

The three papers reported on the meeting in Moscow between Foreign Minister Riyad Malki and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov with al-Ayyam saying that the two officials agreed not to allow the United States to have sole sponsorship of the Middle East peace process.

Al-Quds said Russia is trying to get Fatah and Hamas to meet in Moscow to end their differences.

The paper quoted Fatah official Azzam Ahmad saying that his party is ready to run for elections in a joint list with Hamas and the other Palestinian factions.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas talked on the phone with King Salman of Saudi Arabia.

It said China contributed $2.35 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza.
