Newspapers Review: Israeli state and settler measures against Palestinians focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, December 20, 2018 (WAFA) – Israeli measures by the state and the settlers against the Palestinian people that affect their life, future and property were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.

The main front page headline in al-Quds highlighted the vote in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, in first reading in favor of a law calling for expelling families of Palestinian attackers from their homes in the occupied territories to an unknown destination, as well as giving government approval for the construction of what Israel has so far considered illegal construction of settlements in the occupied areas.

It said the Arab Knesset member, Ahmad Tibi, has called for an escalation in the struggle against the new fascist Israeli laws.

Al-Ayyam’s main front page story headline said residents of Battir, a village in the south of the West Bank near Bethlehem, have thwarted an attempt by Israeli settles in army uniforms to set up a new settlement on their land, while settlers elsewhere have razed land and uprooted trees as the settlers, sanctioned by their government, have intensified land grab and settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.

The main front page story in al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the decision by the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture to respond in kind to an Israeli ban on import of Palestinian agricultural products.

The paper also said the Israeli forces detained 34 Palestinians in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem while confrontations broke out in many areas.

It quoted Fatah deputy chairman Mahmoud Aloul saying that there will be no solution to the Palestinian issue without the approval of the leadership.

Al-Ayyam highlighted as well the demand by the family of Saleh Barghouti, who was reportedly killed by the Israeli army last week, to reveal all information about what happened to its son after who they believe was arrested alive.

It said the United Nation’s World Food Program has decided to cut support for the Palestinians due to shortage in funding.

It also quoted the UN saying the tunnels Israel said it discovered on the borders with Lebanon do not lead to Israel.

It said the European Union condemned Israel’s demolition of a school in the south of the West Bank.

Al-Quds said the director general of the Social Security Institution, Usama Hirzallah, has resigned over government interference in the work of the institution with the appointment of a government official without the board’s approval.

It said Sweden and Norway contributed $18.5 million to develop Palestinian infrastructure through the World Bank.

The paper also reported on the US decision to pull its troops out of Syria.
