RAMALLAH, Wednesday, December 19, 2018 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds reported that Abdullah II met Abbas and reiterated his support to the Palestinian position, while al-Ayyam said that Abbas briefed Abdullah II on the recent Israeli escalation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Highlighting this visit as its main front page news item, al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Abbas briefed Jordan’s monarch on ongoing Israeli attacks against Jerusalem and its holy places.

Abdullah was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stressing Jordan’s rejection of Israeli actions which ]are a real obstacle to achieving just and lasting peace according to the two-state solution.”

On the other hand, al-Quds opted to spotlight outgoing US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley’s statements on President Donald Trump’s Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century.

It said that as Haley bids farewell to the UN Security Council (UNSC), she assails Palestinians and promotes the so-called deal of the century.

Hayley was quoted in al-Ayyam claiming the US plan “brings new elements to the discussion, taking advantage of the new world of technology that we live in” and that “this plan will be different from all previous ones.”

Still, al-Ayyam opted to highlighted daily home demolitions and West Bank raids in its main news item.

It said that Israeli bulldozers demolished a Palestinian house in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukkaber. In contrast, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida, said two Palestinian-owned houses were demolished.

It added that Israeli occupation forces continue to highly restrict Palestinian movement to Ramallah district for the sixth consecutive day.

Additionally, al-Quds and al-Ayyam highlighted the European Union’s statement reaffirming their commitment to the internationally agreed parameters for settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The EU is truly convinced that the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, which meets Israeli and Palestinian security needs and Palestinian aspirations for statehood and sovereignty, is the only viable and realistic way to end the conflict and achieve just and lasting peace, reportedly said the EU’s statement.

Moreover, al-Quds highlighted the Temporary International Presence in Hebron’s report warning that the city is suffering under the yoke of Israeli occupation and settlers.

It added that the National Conference of the Australian Labor Party decided to recognize the State of Palestine.

The party has reportedly passed a resolution during the closing session of 2018 conference supporting “the recognition and right of Israel and Palestine to exist as two states within secure and recognised borders” and “calls on the next Labor government to recognise Palestine as a state”.

Furthermore, al-Quds said that the Palestinian cabinet calls on the international community to immediately intervene to stop Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.

In this regard, al-Hayat al-Jadida explained that the cabinet called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open a criminal inquiry against Israel, the occupying power.

Highlighting daily raids, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli forces attacked Palestinians in Tammoun town, south of Tubas, injuring several.

Al-Quds added that Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian young man, east of Gaza.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Israeli Jewish settlers slashed the tires of Palestinian-owned cars and spray-painted anti-Palestinian graffiti in Yasouf village, east of Salfit.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces delivered an order to the family of Khalil Jabbarin, a prisoner, in the southern West Bank town of Yatta, informing them of the decision to demolish their house.

Yet, al-Quds said that Israel’s High Court accepted a petition submitted by the Society of St. Yves over the health insurance of Palestinians whose family reunification requests were approved.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam covered news reports about Israeli Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel’s decision to ban the entry of Palestinian fruits and vegetables into Israel.

According to al-Quds, home rental company Airbnb confirmed it is moving ahead with a plan to suspend its listings in Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Highlighting the findings of the latest opinion poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, al-Quds reported that the last Palestinian-Israeli armed confrontations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank have significantly increased the popularity of Hamas.

Furthermore, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Deputy Prime Minister Nabil Abu Rudeineh commending Suadi Arabia for supporting the Palestinian people and cause.

It highlighted Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov’s briefing to the UNSC on the situation in the Middle East.

Mladenov was quoted: “No steps have been taken by Israel during the reporting period to immediately and completely cease all settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.”
