AMMAN, Tuesday, December 18, 2018 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas met with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman on Tuesday during which he briefed the Jordanian monarch on the latest developments in the Palestinian cause and the region, particularly the recent Israeli escalation in the Palestinian territories, arrests, storming of cities and official institutions and the demolition of homes.

The President talked as well about the constant Israeli attacks against Jerusalem and the Islamic and Christian holy places, as well as the ongoing settlement expansion and land grab.

He stressed the importance of maintaining coordination and consultation between them on the latest developments related to the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem.

The President praised Jordan led by King Abdullah II for the support for the Palestinian people, their cause and their just demands.

King Abdullah stressed the need to break the deadlock in the peace process by launching serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis on the basis of the two-state solution, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He stressed Jordan‘s rejection of the unilateral Israeli practices of building settlement units and confiscating Palestinian lands in the West Bank, which constitute a real obstacle to reaching a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.

He called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards the Israeli escalation and exert all pressure on Israel to stop these practices, which will only lead to further violence.

King Abdullah stressed that Jordan stands with all its potential and abilities with the Palestinians to gain their legitimate and just rights and to work with the effective parties and the international community to find political horizons that serve the Palestinian interests and the right of the Palestinian people.

He stressed the importance of preserving the status quo in Jerusalem as the key to achieving peace in the region, stressing that Jordan continues to play its historical and religious role in protecting the Islamic and Christian holy places in Jerusalem based on the Hashemite guardianship over these holy places.
