Newspapers Review: Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, December 18, 2018 (WAFA) – Israel’s demolition of the Naalweh home in Tulkarm as a collective punishment policy was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.

The papers printed pictures of the destroyed home and reactions to it.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Umm Nasser Abu Hmeid, whose house in Amari refugee camp Israel has demolished on Monday as a punishment for her son’s act, visited the Palestinian TV headquarters in Ramallah and met with the head of the official Palestinian media. Ahmad Assaf, to thank him and the TV staff for their coverage of the Israeli measure against her family home.

The three papers – al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds - also highlighted statements by Hussein al-Sheikh, head of the Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority and member of Fatah Central Committee, saying that “we told Israel that we are going to reconsider all the signed agreements,” with al-Hayat al-Jadida adding to the headline: “since they were all torn apart by army and settlers’ practices.”

The papers also quoted Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah saying that time has come to hold Israel accountable for its acts in the occupied territory and to end its occupation.

They also quoted presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh saying that the challenges facing the Palestinian people and leadership demand the highest level of support and solidarity.

The papers also reported on the launch of a joint UN-Palestinian drive to raise $350 million for humanitarian ends in Palestine.

Al-Ayyam said that dozens were injured in the northern Gaza Strip by Israeli army gunfire during the weekly Monday coast protests on the borders with Israel.

It said efforts are underway to launch the Palestinian Democratic Coalition in Gaza to be composed of the Popular and Democratic Fronts, the National Initiative and Fida, with the possibility the People’s Party joining it at a later stage.

The paper reported on what Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said regarding his last meeting in Washington with Jared Kushner, advisor to and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, on the day before Trump has recognized Jerusalem as capital of Israel. The conversation focused on Trump signing papers postponing the decision on moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, which Kushner told Erekat that Trump was not going to sign. Erekat said Kushner yelled at him and said “don’t threaten me.”

Al-Quds said the family of Saleh Barghouti, who was reportedly killed by the Israeli army near Ramallah on Wednesday, rejected the Israel version of his death.
