Palestinians vow to rebuild the Abu Hmeid home demolished by Israel

RAMALLAH, Saturday, December 15, 2018 (WAFA) – A national committee will be established to rebuild the Abu Hmeid home in Amari refugee camp in Ramallah the Israeli army has demolished on Saturday, according to Walid Assaf, head of the Wall and Settlements’ Resistance Commission.

He said the family will also be provided with a home to live in until its house is rebuilt.

Israel demolished the Abu Hmeid’s four-story building after accusing its son, Islam, of killing an Israeli soldier in the camp in May. The beleaguered family already has four of its sons serving several life terms and a fifth held in administrative detention. A sixth was killed be the Israeli army. Islam is also expected to be handed down at least one life term when his trial ends.

Assaf told a press conference at the destroyed building that the committee will decide whether to build the house at the same location or somewhere else.

“Our people will not accept the collective punishment policy of the occupation against women and children in order to satisfy the settlers, which is in violation of all international humanitarian laws and conventions, particularly the Fourth Geneva Conventions,” he said. “We will not accept the policy of home demolition.”

This is the third time Israel demolished the Abu Hmeid residence for the participation of members of the family in resisting the Israeli occupation, the first was in 1994 and the second in 2004.

President Mahmoud Abbas also gave instructions to rebuild the Abu Hmeid home, according to Hussein al-Sheikh, member of Fatah Central Committee, explaining that the president is following up on Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and their homes.

He said President Abbas is conducting contacts in the region and around the world to stop the Israeli escalation.
