Newspapers Review: Israeli army killing in West Bank focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, December 13, 2018 (WAFA) – The Israeli army killing of Saleh Barghouti near Ramallah on Wednesday night was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on  Thursday.

The papers came out before reports had surfaced of two more Israeli killing of Palestinians in Nablus and in East Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam said Barghouti was “executed”, and said that large Israeli forces had raided his village, Kobar, north of Ramallah.

Al-Quds said Barghouti was killed during an army operation in Surda, north of Ramallah.

The paper also quoted the US State Department, in a report by its correspondent in Washington, that it was not sorry for its controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

It said in another story that Israel plans to build a neighborhood for the foreign embassies along the 1948 armistice line near Jabal al-Mukabbir neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam said Russia called on Israel to consider the negative repercussions for raiding Ramallah.

It said the US envoy, Jason Greenblatt, has condemned in a tweet incitement against President Mahmoud Abbas.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Palestine’s ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, saying that a protest letter is going to be submitted to the Security Council against Israeli threats aimed at the life of President Abbas.

It quoted Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, saying that the president issued instructions to go the UN Security Council for full membership for Palestine in the UN.

It also said President Abbas met with a delegation of Palestinian mayors of Arab towns inside Israel.
