Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight Israeli demolition of Palestinian house in occupied Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, Thursday, November 29, 2018 (WAFA) – Israeli demolition of a Palestinian house in occupied East Jerusalem was highlighted on the front page of the Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.

The house was located in Jabal al-Mukabber neighborhood and was demolished for lack of a building permit, as reported in al-Quds daily, which Palestinians say is hard to get from the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem.

It said that the Israeli High Court allowed the Jewish National Fund to own 522 dunums of Palestinian land south of Bethlehem, with al-Ayyam saying in its main front page story that the High Court supported seizing Palestinian land for the construction new settlement units deemed illegal by international law.

The main front page story in al-Quds highlighted the so-called Deal of the Century and the paper said in a report from its correspondent in Washington that the US administration is going to make this deal public in the near future after it gets ready, quoting in this the US State Department’s spokeswoman.

It quoted in another story US President Donald Trump saying that US presence in the Middle East is to serve Israel.

On other US policies in the region, al-Ayyam said Palestinians have condemned calls by the US ambassador to Israel, David Freidman, on the Palestinian Authority to release a detainee accused of illegally selling property in Jerusalem to Jewish settlers.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmad speaking on the Fatah-Hamas reconciliation efforts spearheaded by Cairo. He said that no new paper for reconciliation has been presented by Egypt and that any talk about this was intended to sabotage these efforts.

Al-Quds quoted Ahmad saying: “We do not trust Hamas and Egypt did not present a new paper for reconciliation.”

Al-Ayyam quoted Ahmad saying: “We are in the process of implementing measures that would undermine the division authority (Hamas) without hurting our people in the Gaza Strip.”

The paper also said that the calm understanding between Hamas and Israel in Gaza is at an impasse due to Israel’s stalling.

The three papers also highlighted statement by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

Al-Quds reported on statements made by several parties on this day.

It said in another report that the Latin Church in Jerusalem is objecting to Israeli takeover of church land in the northern Jordan Valley.
