RAMALLAH, October 3, 2018 (WAFA) – Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee Member Hanan Ashrawi briefed on Tuesday the Head of Mission of the EU Co-ordinating Office for Palestinian Police Support (EUPOL COPPS), its officials and staff members at its headquarters in Ramallah.
Ashrawi reviewed the latest political developments following the convening of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly and President Mahmoud Abbas‘ speech last Thursday and its emphasis on the pursuit of a just peace based on international law, the respect for Palestinian rights and the destructive nature of the US administration‘s latest unilateral measures, according to a press release by Ashrawi’s office.
She addressed future Palestinian moves in light of Israel‘s serious escalation of its egregious violations of international law and the US administration‘s complicity in the military occupation, as well as the failure of the international community to hold Israel to account and to provide protection for the Palestinian people, it added.
The discussion also reviewed Palestinian domestic realities, including the imperative of reconciliation and elections and the work of the Palestinian Civil Police.
In that context, Ashrawi affirmed the Palestinian leadership‘s commitment to promoting and protecting the rule of law, human rights and social justice: "Addressing internal issues is not done in isolation from the military occupation which has an adverse impact on all aspects of Palestinian life. For nation-building to succeed, its needs a just political solution before Israel succeeds in generating more violence, extremism and instability," said Ashrawi.
At the end of the meeting, Ashrawi praised the role of the EUPOL COPPS and its staff in training the Palestinian police forces and improving their performance and development and in supporting the justice sector and the rule of law throughout occupied Palestine. She also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation and coordination in all fields.
