Newspapers Review: US decision on UNRWA focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, September 1, 2018 (WAFA) – The latest United States decision cutting all aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the Palestinian reaction to it was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

The main headline on this subject in al-Hayat al-Jadida said: “America officially declares war on Palestine’s refugees.”

Al-Ayyam headline said: “Officially, the US administration declares cut in all aid to UNRWA.”

Al-Quds said: “The Trump administration announces an end to all of its aid to UNRWA.”

The papers said the Palestinians strongly opposed this move while Israel has supported it.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Germany made an additional large contribution to UNRWA and called on the Europeans to follow suit.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Guardian saying Trump policy toward the Palestinian issue is a recipe for chaos.

Al-Quds quoted analysts saying cancelling UNRWA will flare up the region.

In other news, the dailies highlighted the weekly Friday protests at the Gaza border with Israel and in the occupied West Bank.

Al-Quds said hundreds were injured when Israeli forces cracked down on the marches at the Gaza border and in Kufr Qaddoum, Nilin and Bilin in the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam quoted member of the Palestine Liberation Organization Ahmad Majdalani saying that UN Special Coordinator Nickolay Mladenov held negotiations with Hamas and Israel for a truce agreement between them behind the Palestinian leadership back and that the PLO is going to tell US Secretary General Guterres that he has exceeded his duties.

It quoted Hamas official Khalil Hayyeh saying: “We did what we were asked for and we reduced the amount of incendiary balloons in return for ending the blockade.”

It also said world singer Lana Del Rey has decided not to perform in Israel.

Al-Quds said Adnan Gheith has been sworn in by President Mahmoud Abbas as governor of Jerusalem, replacing Adnan Husseini, who will remain Palestinian cabinet minister of Jerusalem.

The papers also reported on the rise in murder in Arab society in Israel and Israeli police failure to deal with the situation.
