RAMALLAH, August 5, 2018 (WAFA) – News about the death of a Palestinian teen who succumbed to wounds sustained by Israeli forces during the recent protests at Gaza border hit the front pages of three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Sunday.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Moath Ziad al-Sory, 15, from al-Nusseirat in the central Gaza Strip, was injured after he was shot in the stomach by Israeli soldiers during Gaza border protests last Friday. He was moved to a city hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The papers added that an Israeli drone fired a missile on Saturday at a group of Palestinians near the Gaza-Israel border fence to the east of Jabalia town, in the northern Gaza Strip.
The three dailies reported a statement by the presidency. The statement reaffirmed the constant position of President Mahmoud Abbas and the leadership towards the issues of Jerusalem and the refugees as the basis for any future peace solution.
The presidency’s statement came in response to reported US plans to dissolve the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in order to liquidate the refugee issue.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said that President Abbas welcomed the Iraqi national football team in the presidential headquarters in the city of Ramallah, the occupied West Bank.
The Iraqi team arrived in Ramallah on Saturday ahead of its first match in Palestine against the Palestinian football team.
The newspapers said that Israeli navy Saturday seized a Gaza-bound aid ship while in international sea water and steered it to the Israeli seaport of Asdod.
Al-Ayyam said that according to emails obtained by the US-based Foreign Policy journal, Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor, seeks to push to close UNRWA and end the Palestinian refugee status.
Jordan‘s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi warned of the consequences of the UNRAW’s ongoing financial shortfall, as reported by al-Ayyam.
Israeli Minister of Construction and Housing Yoav Galant said that terrirosim has to be stopped before any possible agreement is signed with Hamas, according to al-Ayyam.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Fatah called on Hamas to respond to national unity efforts and not to accept any truce with Israel in exchange for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, thousands protested in the city of Tel Aviv and other Arab towns in Israel against Israel’s racist recent nation-state law.
