Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight rise in tension, visit of Moroccan minister

 

RAMALLAH, March 28, 2018 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted rise in tension in Jerusalem as a result of planned intrusions by Jewish extremists into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Friday as well as plans for the march of return in Gaza also planned for Friday marking Land Day, in addition to the visit of the Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said extremist Jewish groups called on Muslims to stay away from Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites, on Friday, the Muslim holy day, in order for them to perform the sacrifices for the Jewish Passover holiday.

Al-Quds said 700 members of Israeli police are training for breaking into al-Aqsa mosque in case of any violence.

Palestinian cabinet warned of the Israeli measures in al-Aqsa Mosque, saying it may come out with the worst consequences, according to al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds.

Al-Quds highlighted news about Israel’s expectations that intense clashes could move from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank amidst preparations for the March of Return on Friday.

Al-Ayyam said preparations are being rushed for the March of Return as activists promise it will be successful.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Abbas met with Bourita at the presidential headquarters in the city of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, where Abbas praised Morocco’s role in supporting the Palestinian cause and stressed the important of the Arab support for the Palestinian position.

On his turn, Bourita emphasized the importance of his visit to Palestine, reaffirming his country’s support for the Palestinian leadership and people.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam reported a statement by presidential spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh in which he said that the US decisions, particularly those by the Congress are tantamount to declaring war on the Palestinian people and support for the policy of occupation and aggression.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem issued demolition notices against several homes in Silwan, an East Jerusalem Arab neighborhood.

Nickolay Mladenov, the UN special coordinator for the Palestinian areas, said that the ongoing Israeli settlement expansion and related activities continue to further threaten the viability of the two-state solution and eroding the prospects for peace, as reported in al-Quds.

Al-Quds said Germany and France are exerting effort to mend Palestinian-US relations.

It quoted Hamas official saying that it is too early to point the finger of blame on any party regarding the attempt at the life of the prime minister and the chief of intelligence.

It said Jewish settlers in Hebron are still after two homes for the Za’atari family located in the old city.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Inter-Parliamentary Union rejected after meeting in Geneva the US decision on Jerusalem as capital of Israel, which it considered null and void

It said Palestinian-American lawyer, Rashida Talib, said she will run for the US Congress for the Michigan seat after succeeding in three terms to be a member of the state parliament, saying she will wear the traditional Palestinian thoub (garment) with the colorful Palestinian embroidery.
