Newspapers Review: Fatah Revolutionary Council’s meeting focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, March 5, 2018 (WAFA) – The wrap-up session of Fatah Revolutionary Council’s three-day meeting in Ramallah hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Monday.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Fatah Revolutionary Council (FRC) reiterated its support for President Mahmoud Abbas and his political outlook.

The dailies added that FRC called for convening the Palestinian National Council as soon as possible to renew the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) national legitimacy as the sole representative of the Palestinian people.

Al-Ayyam added that FRC called on the PLO Executive Committee to implement the Palestinian Central Council’s decisions to reconsider ties with Israel and agreements signed with it.

According to al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida, FRC considered that the US declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “can never create any new legal reality on the ground.”

According to the three dailies, Abbas has approved the 2018 general budget.

Furthermore, al-Quds reported that Israeli military has completed the installation of three watch towers at Damascus Gate leading to Jerusalem’s Old City.

It added that an Islamic Jihad delegation held a meeting with an Egyptian security delegation in Gaza.

Abu Jame, a 59-year-old Palestinian farmer, was killed by Israeli forces on Saturday while working in his land east of Khan Younes.

Highlighting detention raids, al-Quds said Israeli police detained a Palestinian family from East Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Issawiya.

Al-Ayyam added that Israeli forces detained a German solidarity activist purportedly for hurling stones at soldiers in the Ramallah-district village of Bilin. According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces detained nine Palestinians mostly in West Bank overnight raids.

Al-Quds added clashes erupted between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Al-Ayyam also reported that Israeli military sprayed herbicides over thousands of dunums of Palestinian farmlands east of the besieged Gaza Strip.

The dailies said Israeli police injured a Palestinian citizen of Israel purportedly for ramming his vehicle into four Israelis in Akka (Acre), leaving two soldiers and a police officer injured.

The dailies also spotlighted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported deputy Saudi foreign minister for international affairs Abdul-Rahman al-Rasi saying that his country would not be distracted from the Palestinian question as a result of the challenges facing Arab states.

Rasi made his comments during  a session for the Arab League at the permanent representatives level in Cairo.

King of Jordan Abdullah II was reported in al-Quds and al-Ayyam calling for launching serious Palestinian-Israeli talks to achieve the two-state solution.

Al-Quds published a translation for Xinhua news agency’s news analysis: Palestinians seek multilateral mechanism to oversee peace process with Israel.
