Newspapers review: President’s speech inaugurating Fatah’s meeting focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, March 2, 2018 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech at the opening of a three-day meeting for Fatah Revolutionary Council in Ramallah hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Friday.

Abbas was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating: “There is a growing international acceptance of the need to expand the sponsors of the peace process.”

He was also reported in the dailies reiterating his commitment to achieving intra-Palestinian reconciliation as a “supreme national interest that must be achieved by all means.”

On the other hand, al-Quds reported that US President Donald Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kushner “continues to hone” the so-called “deal of the century” for Palestinian-Israeli settlement.

It added Palestine has urged European countries to intervene with the US administration to persuade it to amend its peace plan and that European diplomacy was racing against time in an attempt to amend the deal.

Al-Quds also reported Member of Palestine Central Council Nabil Amr disclosing that the Palestinian leadership have set up “effective communication channels” with the US administration.

Al-Ayyam reported the White House stating in this regard that the so-called “deal of the century” has not been finalized yet.

According to al-Quds, Abbas and Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah received Brazilian Minister of External Relations Aloysio Nunes and discussed with him the latest developments.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israel forces detained a Palestinian female teen from Bethlehem purportedly for planning to carry out a stabbing attack.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added Israeli force infiltrated the Gaza borders near Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds added that Israeli Jewish settlers have stepped up their attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam explained that settlers, under the protection of Israeli forces, celebrated Purim holiday in a march in the heart of the southern West Bank city of Hebron, provoking Palestinians.

Al-Quds reported US Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov announcing that two meetings would be held in Cairo and Brussels during March in support of prompt projects in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The dailies said that  Britain’s Prince William was expected to visit the occupied Palestinian territories in the summer. Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Palestinian Presidency welcomed William’s visit, which would come as Abbas’ invitation.
