Newspapers Review: Dozens hurt in day 5 of protests, say dailies

RAMALLAH, December 12, 2017 (WAFA) – Day 5 of protests in the West Bank and Gaza Strip against the US decision recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital left dozens of people injured as a result of Israeli army cracked down, the three Palestinian Arabic dailies reported in their Tuesday issue.

Al-Ayyam said in its main front page story headline: “Dozens injured in day 5 of Al-Quds uprising,” while al-Hayat al-Jadida said 146 were injured and al-Quds reported injuries from live and rubber bullets without giving number in the headline.

The three papers also continued to report on world reaction to the US decision and the meeting President Abbas is holding in Cairo and other places to counter this decision.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida gave prominence on its front page for Abbas’ meeting with his Egyptian counterpart in Cairo.

The papers also reported on the meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and European Union officials in Brussels and said the EU stressed once again its adherence to the two-state solution and that Jerusalem should be the capital of the two states.

In other news, the papers quoted government spokesman Yousef al-Mahmoud saying that the government has not yet been fully empowered in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Ayyam also said in another story, quoting Minister of Telecommunications Allam Mousa, that the 3G network service for cellular phones is going to finally be provided in the West Bank and Gaza Strip before the end of next month. Israel has delayed the Palestinian companies from having this service.

It also said in an after midnight report that Israel shelled locations in Gaza after its air defenses intercepted a rocker fired from Gaza.
