Newspapers Review: Protests against US move on Jerusalem highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, December 9, 2017 (WAFA) – The widespread demonstrations that raged in the occupied Palestinian territories and around the world in protest against US recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

The main front page headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida read: “The world stands up for Jerusalem,” in reference to the protests and the debate at the United Nations Security Council in which 14 member states out of 15 spoke against the US move.

Al-Quds headline read: “Our people at home and in the Diaspora rise in support of Jerusalem.”

Al-Ayyam said: “Two martyrs in the Gaza Strip and hundreds of wounded in the Friday of rage confrontations.”

The three papers printed pictures of the confrontations and the Israeli security forces’ crackdown in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

They also included stories from around the world of the demonstrations, all strongly denouncing the US decision.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Saeb Erekat, member of the PLO Executive Committee and its chief negotiator, saying that there will be no talks with the US administration before going back on its decision on Jerusalem.

Al-Quds also quoted Azzam al-Ahmad, member of Fatah Central Committee, saying in a TV interview that all communications with the US are cut.

Al-Ayyam said President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the world’s consensus against the US decision on Jerusalem.

While al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam filled their front page of stories and reactions to the US move, al-Quds included on the front page other stories, such as the anniversary for the outbreak of the first Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, against the Israeli occupation 30 years ago on December 9, 1987, and which lasted for six years until the signing of the Oslo agreement.

It also reported on Israeli settlement plans in the occupied territories and Israeli settlers attacking the West Bank village of Qusra under army protection and terrorizing its residents.
