Abbas welcomes international consensus against US move

RAMALLAH, December 8, 2017 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas Friday welcomed the international condemnation of the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which was reiterated during the emergency session of the UN Security Council.

He praised the positions of world countries, which affirmed their rejection of this dangerous US move, which violates all international resolutions and the basis of the peace process that considers Jerusalem as a final status issue.

Abbas stressed that the consensus on rejecting the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is a message of strong support for the rights of the Palestinian people and their just cause in their land, especially the issue of the city of East Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine.

"We reiterate our position against the statement made by the United States representative at the UN Security Council during the session, which violates the position of the international consensus,” Abbas said.

"We renew our rejection of the American position towards the city of Jerusalem," he said, stressing that the United States of America is no longer qualified to act as the broker and mediator of the peace process.
